George Wesley Cook, Jr., 84, of Newton, Texas died Thursday, June 24, 2010 at Holiday Pines Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Woodville after a lengthy illness. He was born in the Rock Hill Community of Henderson County, Texas near the town of Brownsboro on June 5, 1926 to the late George and Fannie Tergerson Cook, and had made his home in Newton since 1948. On June 29, 1957 he wed the former Miss Mona Hatfield Shirley. Mr. Cook taught Vocational Agriculture at Newton High School for 38 years, was a faculty advisor for the Newton FFA and was a founding member of the Newton County Fair Association. He was also a past Newton Fire Chief and Newton City Fire Marshal and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Newton. He was one of eight children, sisters Fayrene, Hazel, and Sue and brothers Rudolph, Neilan and Leon all precede him in death with one sister surviving Ruth Cook Adams of Warren, Texas. Four Children were born to George and Mona, Annie Jo, Rebecca, George III "Bubba" and Kevin. He and Mona were married for 53 years. She passed away November 20, 2010 at the age of 75. Both are buried in the Rock Hill Cemetery near Brownsboro, Texas.
